Total Hardness Water hardness or water-based mud

"Total hardness" or "hardness" is a measure of calcium (Ca2) and magnesium (Mg 2 +) ions in water-based mud . The total of both soluble ions of calcium (Ca2) and magnesium (Mg 2 +) is given by titration with standard solution Vesenate.

What will happen if you have a lot of total hardness in your drilling mud?

• Bad sludge cake ( thick and spongy )

• High fluid loss

Flocculation • clay content

• Less effective polymer

• Chemical Treatment Ineffective

For Most Of The Water base mud , The acceptable value of total hardness Must Be below300 mg / L . However, if you use lime mud , You Can accept a High Value Which Should Be Kept below 400 mg / L .
